The gameplay file

Every system shown in the first hands-off gameplay preview at Rockstar North — three hours of play, distilled into the parts that change how you'll approach Leonida.

The world & map scale

The scale, density and interactivity lean hard on what Red Dead Redemption 2 established — then go bigger.

Map · 2× GTA VMap · 3× RDR2Vice City · 2× Los SantosWith suburbs · 11× the LS equivalent
  • Very high pedestrian and traffic density throughout the world.
  • Wildlife on the RDR2 level — manatees, dolphins, hogs, birds — and all of it can be studied by the player.
  • Diving returns with real mechanics: scuba gear comes with a dedicated oxygen-tank meter.

The Criminal Profile & relationships

The traditional morality/honor bar is gone. Two dynamic trackers shape how the game reacts to you instead.

Criminal Profile

  • Measures how professional a criminal you are — not how good or evil.
  • Clean robberies with no needless casualties raise it; mindless rampages lower it.
  • Drop low enough and the profile permanently shatters for that playthrough — locking you into a chaotic state.

Jason & Lucia

  • Each protagonist has a separate profile, plus a shared relationship tracker.
  • Build the bond by texting, spending time together, holding hands, going on dates — or ignore it entirely and keep it strictly business.

Law enforcement

The police system is fully overhauled — escaping is strategy now, not driving out of a colored circle.

  • No police icons on the minimap. HUD indicators (flashing red/blue) show the direction they're closing from.
  • The 6-star wanted level is back, with distinct states:
White stars — cops have direct line of sight on you.
Hollow stars — dispatched, but they don't know exactly who they're looking for.
Red stars (Heat) — you broke line of sight; police lock down a perimeter shown as a red zone. Slip out quietly to survive.
  • The UI shows exactly what the cops know: your face, vehicle, outfit, weapons. Wipe CCTV footage, change clothes, or split up from your partner to shake them.
  • High-end cars and police cruisers carry built-in trackers — steal one and they always know where you are until a fence removes it.

Core stats & the Focus ability

Alongside health, Jason and Lucia run two more core stats: stamina and Focus.

  • Temporary boosts past 100% via consumables — protein shakes and food from your safehouse fridge or stores.
  • Permanent upgrades through side activities like the gym.
  • Focus — Dead Eye's cousin. Slows time and highlights weak points: red (lethal) and yellow (non-lethal) zones on NPCs; engine block, gas tank and tires on vehicles mid-chase.

Combat, loadouts & gunplay

Gunplay drops GTA V's arcade edges and leans realistic.

  • No more hard lock-on — replaced by modern aim assist with weapon bloom.
  • Hit markers: white = hit, red = kill, and a new yellow = incapacitated (down, no longer a threat).
  • Limited loadout: two one-handed and two two-handed weapons on your person — the rest of the arsenal lives in your personal vehicle's trunk.
  • Crouching returns, and you can dual-wield duffel bags to carry more loot.

Economy, fences & robberies

Money splits into three buckets in the UI:

Bank · safeCash · lost if you die or get arrestedDuffel loot · must be fenced to spend
  • Deposit physical bills at ATMs — banked money is the only safe money.
  • Robberies scale dynamically: corner-store stick-ups up through high-security jewelry stores and banks.
  • Car theft has tiers now. Older cars need a Slim Jim to beat the alarm; modern high-end cars need a Key Cloner to start. No tools? Your only option is carjacking something with the engine already running.

Vehicles & driving

Heavier, more grounded physics — and much deeper interaction.

  • Fuel is real. Gas stations (and EV charging) are part of the loop.
  • Cars have weight — floor a rear-wheel drive from a dead stop and you'll spin out. Top speeds are noticeably higher than GTA V.
  • Seamless driver/shooter swap with your partner mid-chase — hang half out the window with a rifle and target pursuing engine blocks.
  • Street racing gets nitrous, and underground car meets are built into the open world.

Life-sim & side activities

  • Safehouses are deeply interactive — use appliances, grab specific stat-boosting snacks from the fridge, even throw trash in the bin.
  • The smartphone is the hub: a social app with real-time NPC-posted events you can actually go find in the world, "Buckme" (CashApp parody), "RideMe" (Uber parody) and "Scooter Bros" (calls your mechanic).
  • Gyms with paid memberships and rep mini-games, basketball courts, shooting ranges, underground wrestling.
Everything above is creator-reported from a hands-off preview and may change before launch. We'll re-verify each system at release and link every claim to footage — that's the standing promise of this site.
